Wawa shoplifting call turns bizarre as suspect starts drinking
Fredericksburg, VA – A larceny call at a local Wawa quickly escalated when a suspect accused of shoplifting allegedly began drinking alcohol in front of a responding deputy, leading to multiple charges and an arrest.
The incident occurred Monday around 8:38 p.m. at the Wawa located on South Gateway Drive, according to authorities.
Deputy Jenkins responded to a report of theft and made contact with the suspect, later identified as Rashawn Lucas, 21, of Fredericksburg.
During the encounter, the deputy observed signs of impairment, including glassy eyes, slurred speech, unsteady balance, and the odor of alcohol.
Authorities said Lucas then consumed an alcoholic beverage in front of the deputy.
Store surveillance footage showed Lucas entering the store, selecting alcoholic beverages, and leaving without paying after passing all points of sale.
