New Jersey’s Famous Wildwood Boardwalk to Have a Curfew This Summer

WILDWOOD, N.J. — Visitors will have to leave the boardwalk between 1 a.m. and 5 a.m. under a newly adopted city ordinance aimed at reducing late-night disturbances, Wildwood officials announced this week.

City commissioners advanced Ordinance No. 1350-26 earlier this month and held a final vote Wednesday, April 22, formally establishing overnight closure hours for the popular waterfront attraction.

Overnight closure targets safety concerns

The new rule bars the public from remaining on the boardwalk during overnight hours year-round, with exceptions for emergency personnel, authorized city workers, contractors, and approved activities.

Deputy Mayor and Commissioner of Public Safety Steve Mikulski said the change is designed to address issues that tend to arise after midnight without disrupting normal business operations.

“These hours are designed to limit late-night crowds and support a welcoming friendly atmosphere for everyone to enjoy the best of our Boardwalk,” Mikulski said.

He added the policy is focused on preventing loitering, large gatherings, and behavior that can impact public safety and quality of life.

Businesses remain open under new rules

City officials emphasized that the ordinance does not restrict legitimate business activity, signaling that boardwalk merchants can continue operating while the city manages overnight access.

The measure follows ongoing concerns from local leaders about maintaining order in high-traffic tourist areas, particularly during peak seasons when late-night crowds can strain public safety resources.

Signage outlining the new hours will be installed לאורך the boardwalk, and enforcement will fall to the Wildwood Police Department.

Key Points
• Wildwood boardwalk will close daily from 1 a.m. to 5 a.m. year-round
• Ordinance aims to reduce late-night crowds and improve public safety
• Rule exempts emergency personnel and authorized workers

What visitors should expect

Officials are urging residents and tourists to plan ahead and respect posted hours once enforcement begins.

The ordinance applies year-round, not just during the summer season, marking a broader policy shift for one of New Jersey’s busiest shore destinations.

City leaders say the goal is to balance tourism and economic activity with safety, ensuring the boardwalk remains accessible and enjoyable during regular hours.

Implementation and enforcement

The Wildwood Police Department will enforce the closure under city ordinances, though officials have not detailed specific penalties for violations.

The city also has not announced an exact start date for enforcement beyond the ordinance’s adoption, but signage and public outreach are expected to roll out in the coming weeks.

As of now, the ordinance has been adopted following the April 22 public hearing, and the overnight closure policy is set to take effect as part of Wildwood’s ongoing public safety strategy.
