Massachusetts husband sentenced to life for fatal stabbing of wife in North Adams

A four-year case ends with a life sentence after a fatal domestic violence attack inside a Charles Street apartment.

NORTH ADAMS, MA – A Massachusetts man has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole after being convicted of killing his wife inside her North Adams apartment, a crime prosecutors say unfolded as she prepared to leave the relationship. The sentence for Luis Rosado, 53, closes a case that began with a late-night confrontation in May 2022 and ended with a son discovering his mother dead the following day.

Rosado was found guilty of murdering 38-year-old Jillian Tatro, according to the Berkshire County District Attorney’s Office. The couple had begun dating in September 2021 and married four months later, but by the spring of 2022, investigators said the relationship had deteriorated amid ongoing domestic violence.

Timeline of the night and discovery

On May 28, 2022, Rosado and Tatro were at her second-floor apartment at 46 Charles Street, a residence along a narrow, hilly road in the western Massachusetts city near the New York border. A downstairs neighbor reported hearing the couple before leaving for work around 10:15 p.m.

Roughly 30 minutes later, Tatro’s son arrived at the apartment and encountered Rosado leaving the scene. Authorities said Rosado told the son that “his mother had left the apartment with a friend.” Both men departed the area shortly afterward.

By the following evening, Tatro’s son had not heard from his mother and returned to the apartment. After entering, he found her dead and contacted police. Officers responded at approximately 7:54 p.m. and entered the residence, where they “observed Ms. Tatro lying on her back near the entryway,” the district attorney’s office stated. “It was evident that she had suffered from some type of stab wound.”

A medical examiner later determined Tatro “had been stabbed ten times, slashed six times, and suffered blunt trauma to her head.”

Evidence and domestic violence history

Investigators used evidence from the scene, cellphone data, and witness interviews to establish a timeline, concluding that Rosado killed Tatro between 10:15 p.m. and 10:42 p.m. that night. Prosecutors also said “domestic violence was a longstanding factor” in the relationship.

Witness accounts presented during the investigation indicated escalating threats in the days before the killing. One witness reported overhearing Rosado tell Tatro that “he would kill her if she left him,” according to then–Berkshire County District Attorney Andrea Harrington. The couple was also heard arguing the night of the killing.

Following the sentencing, Berkshire County District Attorney Timothy Shugrue addressed the impact of the case and the role of Tatro’s family in the trial.

“Today, my thoughts are with Ms. Tatro’s children and family,” Shugrue stated. “Ms. Tatro’s son demonstrated tremendous poise and courage during his testimony in the trial. Ms. Tatro was a victim of domestic violence.”

Shugrue also emphasized the risks faced by victims attempting to leave abusive relationships. “The most dangerous time in a [domestic violence victim’s] life is when they are prepared to leave,” he said. “We know that Jillian was planning to leave on the Tuesday following her murder. Her death is a tragic example of lethal consequence of domestic violence and the lasting impact these crimes have on families and communities.”
