Centerburg player thought she won $599 before realizing the machine hit for $50,000
CENTERBURG, Ohio — An Ohio woman who decided to try a different lottery game during a stop at a local tavern walked away stunned after discovering what she thought was a small win was actually a $50,000 jackpot.
K. from Centerburg was visiting the 1834 Midway Tavern at 29 N. Clayton St. when she decided to play 50 Year Fortune, an Ohio Lottery Touch & Win game, according to lottery officials.
The winner said she normally plays progressive games but chose to try something different after putting $20 into the machine.
She won small amounts and lost some money before telling a friend she was not sure whether she liked the game.
Moments later, the machine delivered what she initially believed was a $599 prize.
Her friend urged her to check the screen again, where she realized the actual prize was $50,000.
After mandatory state and federal taxes totaling 26.75%, the winner will receive approximately $36,625.
The winner said she plans to place the money into savings and use it to help make retirement easier and more enjoyable.
Ohio Lottery officials said Touch & Win games are based on traditional Keno-style play and are available only at retailers equipped with Touch & Win terminals.
The odds of winning the top prize in 50 Year Fortune are 1 in 4.65, according to the Ohio Lottery.
