Lakewood Fire Commissioners and Fire Chief Issue Lithium-Ion Battery Safety Tips

Lakewood, NJ — The Lakewood Board of Fire Commissioners and Fire Chief Jonathan Yahr have issued safety guidelines for using lithium-ion batteries, which power various devices such as smartphones, laptops, e-scooters, e-bikes, e-cigarettes, smoke alarms, toys, and cars. Improper use or damage to these batteries can lead to fires or explosions.

Users should purchase devices listed by a qualified testing laboratory (UL) and follow the manufacturer’s instructions. It is crucial to use the correct battery and charging cord for each device and to ensure batteries are inserted properly. Devices should not be charged beyond full capacity or in unsafe locations such as under pillows or on beds.

Batteries should be kept at room temperature and not charged in extreme temperatures below 32 degrees Fahrenheit or above 105 degrees Fahrenheit. Batteries must be stored away from flammable materials.

Signs of battery issues include unusual odors, color changes, excessive heat, shape changes, leaking, or strange noises. If these occur, move the device away from flammable materials and call 911 if it is safe.

Recycling is recommended for disposal. Batteries should be taken to a recycling location or followed by community disposal instructions. Lithium-ion batteries should never be thrown in the trash.

Special charging instructions for e-bikes include using a flat, dry area away from children, direct sunlight, liquids, tripping hazards, and ensuring the e-bike is secure from falling.
