New Jersey Targets Antisemitism on College Campuses with New Legislation

TRENTON, NJ—New Jersey has introduced the “Stop Antisemitism on College Campuses Act,” a stringent new law aimed at combating antisemitism in higher education institutions.

The act prohibits any state aid to colleges that authorize or support antisemitic events or organizations, or fail to enforce policies against such acts.

The legislation mandates that no state aid will be given to institutions that facilitate, fund, or support any event or organization that promotes antisemitism on campus.

Additionally, colleges must enforce their student codes of conduct relating to harassment, intimidation, and bullying, and appropriately punish any acts of antisemitism, potentially with expulsion or criminal prosecution.

This act, effective immediately, utilizes the definition of antisemitism from the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance, adopted on May 26, 2016. The move underscores New Jersey’s commitment to a zero-tolerance policy towards discrimination and harassment on college campuses.
