St. Mary’s County homeowners narrowly escaped a two-alarm fire that resulted in over a million dollars in damage early on Wednesday morning, officials reported.
Firefighters were dispatched just before 4 a.m. to tackle the blaze located in the 17500 block of Whitestone Drive in Tall Timbers after smoke detectors alerted the residents. The fire had originated on the front porch, prompting a quick evacuation through a back door, alerting the authorities. Approximately 70 firefighters from various agencies worked for an estimated 90 minutes to control the fire that ravaged the home.
The Maryland Fire Marshal disclosed that the fire caused an estimated $1.3 million in damage, with fortunately no injuries reported.
As of Monday afternoon, the cause of the fire remains under investigation. Fire crews in the region were busy addressing multiple incidents in the span of 24 hours, including the house fire, which occurred in the wake of a separate blaze that razed Champion Used Auto Parts.
An employee from the auto facility had to be airlifted to a local hospital for treatment of burns.
