Demolition of New Jersey Nabisco Factory to Resume, Town Officials Report

FAIR LAWN, NJ – After nearly a year since plans were put on hold following public outcry, the demolishment of the closed Nabisco factory in Fair Lawn has once again been confirmed. Crews are currently engaged in the deconstruction of the building to pave the way for the construction of a new distribution center on the site formerly occupied by the Nabisco factory.

A borough post on Monday, April 22, announced that demolition at the Nabisco site is set to restart soon, pending state approval.

The method chosen for the demolition is non-explosive, though no further details were shared. Greek Development, responsible for the property’s redevelopment, had previously disclosed that the building would not be imploded, opting for an alternative approach.

Originally scheduled for April 2023, the implosion of the Nabisco factory was delayed, with concerns raised by residents prompting a petition due to worries about the potential environmental hazards posed by the implosion.

The fear stemmed from the presence of asbestos, lead, mercury, PCBs, mold spores, and arsenic in the building, constructed back in 1958. This structure is in close proximity to the Hamilton School, raising concerns about air contamination during the demolition process. The closure of the Nabisco plant in 2021 resulted in the layoff of nearly 600 employees.
