WASHINGTON, DC — Protect the Public’s Trust has raised concerns about the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) data, suggesting it may misguide policy decisions. Michael Chamberlain, Director of Protect the Public’s Trust, highlighted the potential risks of policy misdirection due to inaccuracies in NOAA’s data and analysis.
The organization has formally requested an investigation by NOAA’s scientific integrity officer, pointing to numerous instances of questionable data and compromised scientific integrity. The complaint draws significantly on a critique by University of Colorado Professor Roger Pielke Jr., who has critically examined NOAA’s disaster data and its implications on understanding climate-related events.
Pielke’s recent publication, which critiques NOAA’s disaster tracking data for its alleged inaccuracies, emphasizes the risks of misinforming policymakers and the public about climate-related disasters in the U.S. However, the paper has yet to undergo peer review.
In response to inquiries, a NOAA spokeswoman stated that the agency does not discuss ongoing scientific integrity complaints, maintaining confidentiality during the investigatory process.
