The region is expected to face several rounds of rain, potentially heavy at times, with an additional accumulation of 1-3 inches from tonight through Thursday. The heaviest rainfall is forecasted for Tuesday into Wednesday, raising concerns for urban flooding, particularly at higher rainfall rates. Authorities are monitoring the situation closely, especially the potential for river flooding in the Raritan, Passaic, and Rancocas basins.
The northern New Jersey coast is braced for the greatest surge, potentially exacerbated by onshore gale force winds Tuesday and Wednesday. Near moderate coastal flooding is possible in areas like Barnegat Bay. There is no current forecast for coastal flooding along the tidal Delaware River and the Maryland Eastern Shore.
The severity of flooding will depend on the location of the heaviest rainfall and its rate, given the extended duration of this weather event. Although the risk of severe thunderstorms has decreased and shifted southward, authorities maintain a high confidence (80-100%) in the rainfall predictions, with moderate confidence (40-50%) in the specific details of the event.
