Maryland State Police to Increase Patrols for St. Patrick’s Day Weekend Safety

PIKESVILLE, MD — In an effort to ensure public safety over the St. Patrick’s Day weekend, the Maryland State Police will be ramping up patrols and enforcement against impaired, aggressive, and distracted driving starting Friday. This initiative will span from Friday through Sunday, with troopers from all 23 barracks participating in saturation patrols on roads known for high incidents of DUI.

This increase in enforcement is supported by funding from the Maryland Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Administration’s Highway Safety Office. The State Police Impaired Driving Reduction Effort (SPIDRE) team, specifically trained to spot impaired drivers, will be active throughout the weekend. The SPIDRE initiative, backed by a grant from the MDOT MVA Highway Safety Office, focuses on decreasing alcohol-related injuries and fatalities across the state.

Enforcement activities will be widespread, involving collaboration with allied law enforcement and state agencies to enforce the law and engage in community outreach through various channels, including social media and billboards.

Key areas of enforcement include major routes and highways across several counties, with specific focus on areas with high traffic-related incidents and those known for DUI offenses. The initiative underscores the importance of responsible driving practices, especially during high-risk periods like holiday weekends.

Motorists are advised to plan ahead by designating a sober driver, avoiding drinking before driving, or opting for public transportation, taxis, or ride-share services to ensure a safe return home. This concerted effort aims to reduce the risk of accidents and fatalities, emphasizing the commitment of Maryland State Police to keeping the roads safe for all.
