Fatal Police-Involved Shooting Under Investigation in Hamilton Township

TRENTON, NJ – A fatal shooting involving a Hamilton Township police officer and a civilian has prompted an investigation by the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office. The incident, which occurred on March 8 in Mercer County, resulted in the death of an adult male and injuries to a Hamilton police officer.

Responding to a domestic incident 911 call around 10 p.m. at a residence on Orchard Avenue, Hamilton Township Police Department officers encountered an armed civilian. A confrontation ensued shortly after at approximately 10:10 p.m., leading to an exchange of gunfire. The civilian, wielding a rifle, was fatally wounded and pronounced dead at the scene. Meanwhile, one officer sustained multiple gunshot wounds and is currently receiving medical treatment in the hospital. A firearm was recovered near the deceased civilian.

In compliance with a 2019 law mandating an investigation by the Attorney General’s Office for deaths occurring during law enforcement encounters or in custody, the case will be presented to a grand jury. This is to decide if the evidence justifies an indictment against the involved officers.
