BROOKLYN, NY – Eric Gonzalez, the Brooklyn District Attorney, announced the sentencing of Korey Johnson, a 45-year-old Brooklyn resident, to 14 years in prison for the manslaughter of a cyclist. Johnson, from Ocean Hill, was found guilty of first-degree manslaughter for intentionally hitting a cyclist in Bushwick after witnessing the victim allegedly tampering with his vehicle.
On the morning of September 3, 2019, Johnson observed Donald Roberts, 47, allegedly breaking into his Jeep Grand Cherokee. In response, Johnson pursued Roberts, who fled on a bicycle, resulting in a high-speed chase. Johnson’s vehicle collided with Roberts from behind, causing fatal injuries.
Roberts succumbed to severe blunt force trauma at Woodhull Hospital. Johnson was arrested at the crash site, and his sentencing took place on February 9, following his guilty plea. District Attorney Gonzalez criticized Johnson’s “extreme reaction” to a perceived minor offense, highlighting the unnecessary loss of life and the danger posed to the public.
