Man Arrested for Aggravated Assault Following Racially Charged Incident in D.C.

Washington, D.C. The D.C. Metro Police Department’s Second District has announced the arrest of a man following an aggravated assault that took place in the 3300 block of M Street in Northwest, D.C.

The incident occurred on Friday, January 19th, when an employee at a business in the area became involved in a verbal altercation with the suspect. The confrontation escalated, resulting in the suspect physically assaulting the victim and making derogatory comments based on race before fleeing the scene. The victim received on-site treatment for non-life-threatening injuries from DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services.

George Sommers, 59, of no fixed address, was apprehended on Saturday and has been charged with aggravated assault. The Metropolitan Police Department is investigating the assault as potentially motivated by hate or bias, noting that such a designation can evolve as further information becomes available through the investigation.
