Memphis, TN – Randy Darnell Ewing Jr., 28, of Memphis, wanted for the fatal shooting of Tomanuel Benson, brother of Memphis rapper “Blac Youngsta,” in August last year, has been apprehended. The U.S. Marshals, with the aid of the Memphis Police Department (MPD) and Shelby County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO), announced Ewing’s capture following a series of investigative efforts and a significant public reward.
On August 18th, 2023, a shooting at the BP gas station on South Parkway East prompted a swift response from Memphis police, who discovered Benson with a fatal gunshot wound. MPD detectives identified Ewing as the primary suspect, leading to the issuance of warrants for Second Degree Murder among other charges. The case gained further attention when the U.S. Marshals Two Rivers Violent Fugitive Task Force (TRVFTF) took it on as a major case, offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to Ewing’s arrest, and issuing additional warrants for various serious offenses.
Ewing’s capture occurred last night after a foot chase in the Lamar Avenue and Winchester Road area. Spotted walking along Creighton Avenue by U.S. Marshals and MPD Fugitive team members, Ewing attempted to evade capture but was apprehended by K-9 Officer “Marko” after receiving multiple warnings. Found armed with a handgun, Ewing was treated at a local hospital before being transported to the Shelby County Jail.
