Valentine’s Day Rescue: Injured Seal Pup Rescued in Sea Isle City

Sea Isle City, NJ – The Marine Mammal Stranding Center welcomed a new patient on Valentine’s Day, a female Grey seal pup, found stranded and in need of care on the beach at 66th Street in Sea Isle City.

She was discovered wheezing and numerous small wounds across her face, flippers, and body; the young seal also had a swollen right front flipper. Despite her injuries and a respiratory infection, her weight was deemed good for her age. The seal was quickly transported to the MMSC for medical examination and has since received supportive care, including tube feeding with a mixture of formula and electrolytes.

Her intake weight was 42.8 lbs, and she is now resting comfortably in Tub 6 of the Quonset Hut at the center.

This rescue comes during Grey seal pups’ annual migration from New England and Canadian birthing grounds to New Jersey shores.

These recently weaned pups face the challenge of learning to hunt and evade predators during their journey. The MMSC plays a crucial role in providing assistance to those pups who encounter difficulties along the way.
