Virginia Beach Cyclist Fatally Struck by Jeep at Busy Intersection

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA – On Saturday, at 6:14 PM, the Virginia Beach Police Department (VBPD) responded to a collision at the intersection of Lynn Shores Drive and Virginia Beach Boulevard.

Richard Whelan, a 62-year-old man from Virginia Beach, was struck by a vehicle while riding his bicycle. Despite being rushed to a local hospital, Whelan succumbed to his injuries.

The collision occurred as Whelan rode northbound on Lynn Shores Drive, crossing Virginia Beach Boulevard against a red light.

The westbound Jeep Wrangler, operating on Virginia Beach Blvd, collided with Whelan in the intersection. The Jeep’s driver stopped and cooperated fully with the investigation.
