SAN DIEGO – The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of California has announced the collection of $30,730,539.87 in criminal and civil actions for Fiscal Year 2023. Of this total, criminal actions contributed $27,973,011.98, while civil actions accounted for $2,757,527.89.
The district also collaborated with other U.S. Attorney’s Offices and Department of Justice components to collect an additional $845,298.42 in jointly pursued cases.
U.S. Attorney Tara McGrath emphasized the commitment to compensating victims of criminal acts, stating that the office has worked closely with investigators and victim rights advocates to ensure efficient and maximum restitution.
A notable case cited was United States v. Glenn Arcaro, 21CR2542-TWR, where the government recovered and sold bitcoins controlled by the defendant, resulting in $17,647,813 in restitution paid to victims. Additionally, $1,003,900.17 in forfeited funds were secured for victims. The U.S. Attorneys’ Offices and the Department of Justice’s litigating divisions are tasked with enforcing and collecting civil and criminal debts owed to the U.S. and to victims of federal crimes. Restitution payments go directly to victims, while criminal fines and assessments support the Crime Victims Fund, benefiting federal and state victim compensation and assistance programs.
