Rescue Team Saves Young Grey Seal Pup in Point Pleasant Beach

Point Pleasant Beach, NJ – A four-week-old Grey seal pup was rescued in Point Pleasant Beach on January 12 after being found by a jogger. The pup, discovered on Baltimore Avenue shortly before 10 p.m., is believed to have breached the bulkhead at Lake Louise during a coastal storm.

The Point Pleasant Beach Police Department secured the seal pup’s safety until the arrival of two Marine Mammal Stranding Center (MMSC) Stranding Staff members from Brigantine. Despite challenging weather conditions, the team successfully transported the pup to MMSC, arriving at 1:30 a.m.

Upon arrival, the pup, weighing only 27.4 lbs and still partially covered in her white birthing coat, indicating her young age, was placed in Pen C of the Intensive Care Unit. MMSC’s veterinarian conducted a thorough medical examination. The pup, described as lethargic and very thin, received supportive care, including tube feeding with a formula and electrolyte solution for hydration.

Blood panels have been submitted to identify any underlying medical conditions and to formulate a treatment plan. The pup is currently not eating independently, necessitating assist-feeding of fish and tube-feeding fluids to maintain hydration. Her condition is currently guarded, with more information about her prognosis expected in the coming days. The MMSC team continues to closely monitor and care for the young seal.
