PATERSON, NJ — The once steadfast support of the Arab American community for Rep. Bill Pascrell is wavering significantly due to his stance on the Israel-Hamas conflict. The New Jersey Democrat, who previously won a tough primary with a 20-point margin, faces new challenges from his former supporters in the 9th congressional district.
In Paterson, home to the largest Palestinian American enclave in the U.S., known as Little Ramallah, protests and press conferences have been organized by Arab Americans. Their actions are a direct response to Pascrell’s support for Israel during the recent conflict. Last week, a fundraiser event was disrupted by protesters challenging the congressman’s position.
Former advocates of Pascrell have expressed deep dissatisfaction, labeling him as a “charlatan” and accusing him of ignoring the Palestinian perspective. Their discontent stems from his perceived indifference towards the impact of Israel’s actions in Gaza and his reluctance to endorse a cease-fire.
This shift in support is not just vocal; there are active plans to mobilize against the 86-year-old in the upcoming reelection campaign. Potential backing for Democratic challengers, including a former aide of Pascrell, is being considered.
Feras Awwad, a Clifton school board member with family roots in Ein Karem, Jerusalem, expressed the community’s sense of betrayal. He stated, “You can’t call yourself a friend of the community and then turn your back on them.”
The growing discord in Pascrell’s district mirrors the larger ideological divides within the national Democratic Party. These divides have been exacerbated following Hamas’ attack on Israel on October 7. While federal lawmakers have largely supported Israel’s right to self-defense, the prolonged conflict and the resultant casualties in Gaza have intensified calls for an end to the offensive, especially from the party’s left wing.
