Barnegat Man Charged for Killing His Elderly Parents

BARNEGAT TOWNSHIP, NJ — Michael Mulgrew, 34, of Barnegat, has been charged with the murder of his parents, Eugene Mulgrew, 71, and Cheryl Mulgrew, 69, following a grim discovery at their home on November 2.

Barnegat Township Police Department officers were dispatched at approximately 11:00 a.m. to the Lincoln Avenue residence for a welfare check. Upon arrival, officers noticed a man, later identified as Michael Mulgrew, departing the area and significant red stains on the residence’s front door.

Inside the home, officers found blood in multiple locations and the elderly couple deceased with stab wounds in the bedroom. A knife was located near the scene.

Subsequent investigation by the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crime Unit, Barnegat Township Police Department Detective Bureau, and Ocean County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit determined Michael Mulgrew was the perpetrator of the crime. He was apprehended on West Bay Boulevard and Gunning River Road without resistance.

Mulgrew now faces two counts of Murder, Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose, and Unlawful Possession of a Weapon. He is currently held in the Ocean County Jail pending further legal proceedings.
