CUMBERLAND, MD — Devonte Robert Warfield, 24, of Hagerstown, has been charged with first degree murder following a shooting incident that occurred on October 28, 2023, at 1:40 a.m. in an alley in the Mechanic Street area. Cumberland Police Department initially received the report and discovered a chaotic scene involving multiple gunshot victims.
Upon arrival, officers found a 17-year-old male suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite receiving immediate medical aid from both the police and Cumberland Fire Department, the victim later died at the hospital. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner confirmed that the cause of death was multiple gunshot wounds to the torso.
Warfield was initially arrested for possession with intent to distribute controlled dangerous substances, as he was found carrying cocaine and fentanyl. The initial investigation was conducted jointly by Cumberland Police Department, Allegany County Sheriff’s Office, Maryland State Police, and detectives from the Allegany County Combined Criminal Investigation Unit.
Further investigation led to the identification of three additional gunshot victims, ranging in age from 20 to 24, from the Allegany County area. All three were treated for non-life-threatening gunshot wounds to their lower extremities.
The arrest of Warfield for first-degree murder followed a comprehensive review of witness statements and various pieces of evidence, including a recovered handgun. Authorities have not yet disclosed if Warfield is suspected to have acted alone or if additional arrests may follow.
