PITTSBURGH, PA – A West Mifflin woman, previously awaiting trial for severe child abuse charges, finds herself behind bars again due to violation of her bond conditions, announced Sheriff Kevin M. Kraus.
Ayawna Johnson, 24, initially got arrested in connection to a harrowing case of child abuse dating back to November 2020, where she was charged with three counts of aggravated assault and one count of endangering the welfare of a child. The victim, a 2-year-old boy under her care, suffered from both superficial and deep burns, believed to be caused by scalding bath water. Despite the severity of the injuries, medical attention was only sought later that evening.
Following her arrest on January 5, 2021, Johnson was arraigned, and a bail of $10,000 was set. After Liberty Bail Bonds posted her bail, Johnson awaited trial under specified bond conditions. Her case was under the jurisdiction of Judge Bruce Beemer.
However, as of this week, it came to light that Johnson had not adhered to her bond conditions, prompting Judge Beemer to issue a bench warrant for her arrest. Acting swiftly on acquired leads, detectives located Johnson in Pittsburgh’s Northside, discovering her concealed in a closet at a residence on Federal Street Extension.
