ABINGDON, MD – A 61-year-old retiree from Abingdon, Maryland, has won $50,000 in Powerball’s third-tier prize. The woman, who routinely plays lottery games, purchased the lucky ticket at a local 7-Eleven where she buys her weekly games. “I have the same numbers that I play each time,” the winner shared, “But, it was a quick-pick ticket that I bought for my husband that was the winner.”
The woman typically engages in jackpot games such as Bonus Match 5 and the Pick 3/4/5 games, and was not specifically chasing the staggering $1.765 billion Powerball jackpot that was claimed on October 11 by a player in California. Her routine trip to 7-Eleven #33247 at 3901 Pulaski Highway resulted in the unexpected win.
“I checked the numbers and saw that I had some that matched,” she said. “I knew I had at least a $1,000 winning ticket.” But upon scanning the ticket with her mobile Lottery app, the message displayed was an astounding $50,000.
This isn’t the first time the retiree has struck it rich. In 2017, she won $50,000 playing Bonus Match 5. Her husband was out walking the dog when she discovered the latest win. “She’s lucky, so I thought it was a few hundred dollars, but not $50,000,” he said, recounting his surprise upon his return home.
While claiming the prize at the Lottery’s Customer Resource Center in Baltimore, the grandparents shared their plans to allocate the newfound wealth toward Christmas celebrations, a vacation, and savings.
