WASHINGTON, D.C. — A gunshot victim was administered Narcan by first responders who initially mistook him for a drug overdose case on Sunday night.
Metropolitan Police Department officers arrived at McPherson Square at 9:37 p.m. following reports of gunshots. Upon arrival, they found a man slumped over a park bench and in possession of drug paraphernalia. Believing the man was experiencing a drug overdose, officers and EMS administered Narcan. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
A forensic investigator from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner later discovered a gunshot wound on the deceased. It was concluded that Narcan was not needed in this situation.
Health officials confirmed that Narcan, an opioid antagonist used to counter the effects of opioid overdose, did not contribute to further harm in this case.
