NEWARK, DE – Delaware State Police have arrested 37-year-old Matthew Hazzard of Newark, Delaware, in relation to a violent road rage incident that resulted in significant injuries.
Troopers were alerted to the case when they responded to an area hospital on September 30 at around 10:20 p.m., where they found a 25-year-old male victim with multiple stab wounds. The victim had been driving on I-95 and had merged onto Chapman Road, where Hazzard was also traveling. Both drivers stopped at the intersection of Chapman Road and Christian Road due to a red traffic light. It was then that Hazzard approached the victim’s vehicle and banged on the window.
According to the investigation, the victim exited his vehicle and engaged in a verbal altercation with Hazzard. During the confrontation, Hazzard produced a knife and stabbed the victim. As the victim drove away, Hazzard used the knife to puncture one of his tires. The victim was able to flee the scene and seek medical assistance.
Hazzard voluntarily turned himself into authorities at Troop 2 on October 1 after discussing the incident with troopers.
Hazzard was arraigned by Justice of the Peace Court 11 and was released on a $41,500 secured bond after posting bail.
