MANCHESTER, MD – A meal in Carroll County, Maryland turned into a $50,000 windfall for a Pennsylvania man who decided to purchase a Powerball ticket at Piper’s Wine and Spirit Barn, located at 4127 Hanover Pike in Manchester.
The 51-year-old Adams County resident said he plays the Lottery two to three times a week in both states. Carrying a lucky 50-cent coin in his pocket, he believes it may have contributed to his win in the September 23 Powerball drawing. The winning numbers were 1, 12, 20, 33, and 66, with a Powerball of 21.
“I was only one number away from the jackpot. I had 8 instead of 12,” the winner stated. Employed as a construction company manager, he plans to use the prize money to upgrade the central air conditioning unit in his home and save the remainder.
The Powerball jackpot has continued to roll over and now stands at an estimated annuity of $835 million with a cash value of $390.4 million. This is the fourth-largest jackpot in Powerball history and the ninth-largest in U.S. history. The last time a Powerball jackpot was won in Maryland was on January 20, 2021, for $731.1 million in Allegany County.
