Fatal Two-Vehicle Crash Under Investigation by Delaware State Police

NEWARK, DE – A two-vehicle collision on Thursday afternoon resulted in the death of a 66-year-old Newark man. The crash occurred at approximately 4:51 p.m. on Otts Chapel Road, near Welsh Tract Road.

The driver of a gold 2008 Honda Accord was traveling southbound on Otts Chapel Road in an aggressive manner. He attempted to overtake another vehicle by moving onto the right shoulder, causing him to lose control and veer off the pavement. The Honda reentered the roadway and crossed into the northbound lane, directly in the path of a black 2014 Chevrolet Silverado.

Unable to evade the Honda, the Chevrolet struck the passenger side of the vehicle. Both cars spun out, with the Honda coming to rest on private property and the Chevrolet partially off the road.

The driver of the Honda was taken to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead. His identity is being withheld pending notification of family. The driver of the Chevrolet, a 55-year-old man from Fallston, Maryland, was also transported to the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

The road was closed for about 3.5 hours for investigation and clearing. Delaware State Police Troop 2 Collision Reconstruction Unit continues to probe the incident. Witnesses are encouraged to contact Senior Corporal M. Calio at 302-365-8483 or through Delaware Crime Stoppers at 1-800-847-3333.
