Police have responded to a shooting at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill (UNC), where at least two victims were reportedly injured, on Monday, according to reports.
UNC Police released a photo of a person of interest, an East Asian male, in the shooting. “If you see this person, keep your distance, put your safety first and call 911,” they warned. A user on Twitter later identified the person as Tailei Qi, a Chinese national and alumnus of Wuhan University whose LinkedIn profile lists him as a graduate student at UNC.
“Go inside immediately. Close all windows and doors. Stay inside until further notice. Follow the directions of emergency responders or university officials,” wrote UNC in an email to all students, according to a copy of the email obtained by the Daily Caller News Foundation from a UNC student.
Earlier in the day, AlertCarolina — the warning system for UNC students — had been activated and sent out two messages to students, warning that there was “an Armed and Dangerous person on or near campus,” and ordering them to shelter in place. Pictures from the campus showed students sitting on classroom floors against walls, using their mobile phones.
Schools in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro Schools District were also placed under lockdown as a result of the news from UNC, according to ABC News 11.
The incident comes at a time when colleges and universities across the United States are beginning their fall semesters. Classes for all students at UNC began on Aug. 21, according to the university’s academic calendar on their website.
“[I have] ledged all state resources needed to capture the shooter and protect the UNC campus,” said Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper of North Carolina in a statement posted on Twitter.
