WASHINGTON, D.C. – On Thursday morning, a tense situation erupted into gunfire at the 7400 block of Georgia Avenue in Northwest, D.C.
Officers were dispatched twice to the scene, once at 10 am for a domestic violence report involving a firearm and later for the sounds of gunshots at 10:35 am.
Upon arrival, officers spotted the suspect, 34-year-old Javier Reyes-Lopez, who ignored verbal commands in both English and Spanish. After firing at the police, an officer returned fire, striking Reyes-Lopez. He is now in critical but stable condition at a local hospital.
Reyes-Lopez has been charged with multiple offenses, including assault on a police officer and possessing an unregistered firearm. His firearm was recovered at the scene.
The officer involved has been placed on administrative leave as part of MPD policy, and an investigation is underway, including a review of body camera footage.
