NORFOLK, VA – Detectives have made arrests in connection with a double shooting on E. Brambleton Avenue on Thursday that left one man dead and another injured.
Around 9:45 p.m., two Officers patrolled in the 900 block of E. Brambleton Avenue when they heard gunshots. They saw gunfire from a car passing by and immediately initiated a traffic stop. The car failed to stop, leading to a pursuit that ended in the 300 block of E. Olney Road. Following a brief foot chase, Officers took two men into custody.
The individuals arrested were identified as DeAndre M. Davis, 20, and Arkeem D. Butcher, 24. They have been charged with second-degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder, malicious wounding, and two counts of firearm use. Both are being held in Norfolk City Jail without bond.
The Officers’ swift response led to the discovery of two victims. Eugene L. Thomas, 49, of Norfolk, was found in the 900 block of E. Brambleton Avenue, suffering from a life-threatening gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene. A second victim, a 25-year-old man, was found in the 700 block of Chapel Street and transported to the hospital to treat a non-life-threatening gunshot wound.
Chief Mark Talbot commended the Officers, stating, “These two Officers immediately engaged extremely dangerous individuals who were carelessly shooting. Those of us in law enforcement are in the life-saving business, and Norfolk Police Officers continue to demonstrate that they are going to show up every day, commit themselves to the health and well-being of others, and do whatever is necessary to make this city as safe as it possibly can be. Because of the valiant efforts of these two Officers, the victims have been given swift justice for last night’s reckless and unnecessary violence.”
