JFK INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, NY – Richard Scriven, a recruit of the Suffolk County Police Department, became an unexpected hero on his way to a family wedding.
On his flight to California on July 21, Scriven assisted a fellow passenger who had suffered a heroin overdose.

Scriven, a former paramedic at Stony Brook University Hospital, was alerted to the situation when an announcement was made seeking medical personnel’s help.
Using his recent training, Scriven administered an intranasal dose of Narcan, leading to the man regaining consciousness two minutes later.
He remained with the victim until EMS personnel arrived to transport him to Jamaica Hospital. Scriven then continued on his journey.
