Governor Kathy Hochul has announced the availability of $33.5 million to increase support for LGBTQ+ New Yorkers, with a focus on transgender, non-binary, and gender non-conforming communities. The funding includes investments in LGBTQ+ affirming senior housing, the American LGBTQ+ Museum, and youth suicide prevention.

The FY 2024 Budget allocates $20 million for LGBTQ+ affirming senior housing projects, with $5 million specifically designated for gender affirming housing projects supporting transgender, gender non-conforming, and non-binary individuals. This funding recognizes the unique challenges faced by older LGBTQ+ New Yorkers in accessing affordable and inclusive housing.

To address the vulnerability of TGNCNB (transgender, gender non-conforming, and non-binary) youth, Governor Hochul has directed the New York State Office of Mental Health to provide $1 million for suicide prevention programming. This funding represents a 50% increase in state agency allocations and aims to lower the suicide risk for young TGNCNB New Yorkers, as research indicates higher rates of suicide among transgender individuals compared to the general population.

Additionally, Governor Hochul’s FY 2024 budget includes $7.5 million in capital funding to help the American LGBTQ+ Museum secure a new, permanent home. The museum will be located at the New-York Historical Society, occupying the top floor of a new multi-story wing currently under development. This investment supports the ongoing expansion project and the creation of the LGBTQ+ Museum, which is scheduled to open in 2026.
