Bomb Scare Shuts Down Fairfield Shopping Center

NEWARK, DE – An ongoing criminal investigation by the Newark Police Department led to the closure of a portion of the Fairfield Shopping Center on New London Road.

At approximately 12:40 p.m., authorities received a concerning phone call at the Food Lion store situated at 401 New London Road. The caller made statements alluding to the presence of a possible explosive device within the building. Acting promptly and prioritizing the safety of their customers and employees, store management initiated an immediate evacuation and promptly alerted the Newark Police Department.

Upon receiving the notification, Newark Police swiftly responded to the scene. As a precautionary measure, responding officers established a perimeter around the business, closing off the parking lot to ensure public safety. In addition to the police presence, explosive detection dogs from multiple agencies, including Newark Police, University of Delaware Police, Delaware State Police, and Delaware Natural Resources Police, were summoned to the location.

The trained explosive detection canines meticulously searched the premises to locate any potential threats. After a thorough examination of the building, it was determined that no explosive devices were present. The collaborative efforts of law enforcement and their diligent search confirmed the absence of any immediate danger.

Approximately 90 minutes after the initial call, authorities reopened the parking lot, signaling the conclusion of the investigation. Subsequently, store management promptly reestablished operations and reopened the Food Lion store, enabling customers to resume their shopping activities.
