Delaware State Police Investigate Fatal Single-Car Crash in Georgetown

GEORGETOWN, DELAWARE – The Delaware State Police are currently investigating a fatal single-car crash that took place on April 17, 2023, in Georgetown.

According to the police report, the incident occurred around 10:50 p.m. when a gray 2012 Mercedes-Benz GLK350 was traveling southbound on Old Furnace Road, approaching the intersection at Asbury Road. After passing through the intersection, the driver of the Mercedes failed to navigate a slight curve in the road, causing the vehicle to leave the roadway and enter a ditch.

The SUV then collided with a series of drainage pipes and a mailbox before ultimately colliding with a utility pole. The Mercedes overturned once before coming to a stop upright in a residential front yard.

The driver of the Mercedes, a 36-year-old man from Bridgeville, Delaware, was critically injured in the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene. The police are currently withholding his identity until his family and relatives have been notified.

The incident involved no other vehicles, and Old Furnace Road was closed for approximately four hours while the scene was investigated and cleared.

The Delaware State Police continue to investigate the crash, and no further details have been released at this time.
