Toms River fire deemed accidental, here’s what happened

TOMS RIVER, NJ – The Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office today revealed that a fire that took place yesterday in Toms River that injured one person with severe burns was ruled as accidental after an investigation.

Several Toms River Fire Departments were dispatched to a structure fire on Broad Street on Tuesday which resulted in a burn victim. A 64-year-old male, a tenant of an apartment complex, was found to have suffered serious burns to his body. The patient was taken to Cooper Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, New Jersey, for treatment and further evaluation.

As a result of the investigation conducted by the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crime Unit-Arson Squad and local authorities, investigators concluded that the fire originated on a mattress in the bedroom of the apartment. The cause of the fire was accidental due to smoking.
