NEW CASTLE, DE – Police are continuing to investigate a fatal crash that occurred on Route 141 in New Castle on Friday.
According to the Delaware State Police, at approximately 12:15 p.m.,a 2017 Subaru BRZ was traveling southbound on East Basin Road (Route 141) near William Penn High School at high speeds. In an unknown manner, the Subaru entered the grass median south of Stockton Drive, where it began sliding sideways as it entered the northbound lanes of Route 141.
“As a 2016 Ford F-150 was traveling northbound on Route 141 in the left lane of two northbound lanes, the Subaru’s front struck the left rear tire of the Ford. As the Subaru continued to travel on Route 141, the front of the 2020 BMW X5 struck the Subaru’s passenger side. In the right lane of Route 141 northbound, a 2022 Hyundai Sonata traveling northbound struck the Subaru with its passenger side after the vehicles separated,” DSP said in a statement.
The operator of the Subaru, a 36-year-old male from Newark, who was properly restrained was pronounced deceased at the scene, police said.
We are awaiting notification to the next of kin of the victim’s identity. Excessive speed appears to have been the cause. The Division of Forensic Science is conducting a toxicology analysis at this time to determine the level of impairment.
Despite being properly restrained, the 60-year-old male operator of the BMW was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The 47-year-old male driver of the Ford and the 38-year-old male driver of the Hyundai who were both wearing seatbelts were not injured in the accident.
A portion of Route 141 was closed between Stockton Drive and Frenchtown Road (Route 273) for approximately three hours while the crash was investigated and the roadway was cleared.
