NEWARK, NJ – Two people have been charged for illegal gun possession in Newark.
According to Newark Public Safety Director Fritz G. Fragé reports the arrest of Malcolm Jones-Carter, 27, of East Orange, and Sean K. Smith, 34, of Newark, for separate incidents of weapon possession.
“I am pleased that Newark Police are fully committed to removing illegal guns from our streets and to apprehending the individuals found with illegal weapons,” Director Fragé said. “Seeing that our officers have recovered 467 illegal handguns so far this year, a 33 percent increase over the same period last year, and increased arrests for gun possession by 44 percent, shows that they are working day and night to keep our communities safe from senseless violence,” he added.
According to police, on Thursday, officers responded to Jersey Fried Chicken, at 289 Elizabeth Avenue, on a call of shots fired.
“A male customer, who entered the store to pick up his order, was shot at after observing another male near his vehicle and running outside,” Frage said. “The victim and suspect both fled the scene in separate vehicles before police arrived. Responding officers recovered six spent shell casings at the scene. No injuries have been reported.”
The Newark Police issued the following statement on these arrests:
Detectives investigating this incident identified Sean K. Smith as a suspect and obtained a warrant for his arrest. Smith was arrested today. He faces charges of aggravated assault, unlawful possession of a weapon, and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.
On Monday, July 11, 2022, Police responded to the 400 block of Orange Street on a ShotSpotter detection. Police recovered one spent shell casing at the location. No injuries have been reported.
Detectives investigating this incident identified Malcolm Jones-Carter as a suspect and obtained a warrant for his arrest. He was arrested today. Jones-Carter is charged with unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and certain persons prohibited from weapon possession.
