ROCHESTER, NY – Two Rochester police officers were shot Thursday night on Bauman Street by an unknown suspect.  One of those officers was killed, and the other is in stable condition.  A woman was also shot at the scene during the gunfire. She was treated and released by medics.

The shooting took place at 9:15 when a gunman opened fire on the police officers. The deceased officer was identified as 29-year veteran officer Anthony Mazurkiewicz. The other officer, Sino Seng was shot in the lower body and is expected to survive.

The shooting comes hours after Rochester Mayor Malik Evans declared a gun violence state of emergency after 41 people have been murdered in 2022.

“The tragic gun violence in Rochester must come to an end. Today, we declared a gun violence emergency in our community and this shooting is proof that we are indeed, in an emergency,” said Mayor Evans. “”Our police officers are out there sacrificing their lives for us every day. They perform their jobs in dangerous conditions as we go about our daily lives and we owe them a great debt of gratitude. I pray for the comfort of the officers shot tonight, and for their families, friends, and all of their fellow first responders.”

“I was asked by a reporter, how dangerous is it out there for the officers of the Rochester Police Department? “Every day, the man and woman of this department leave their home, not knowing if they will see their loved ones again,” said Rochester Police Chief David Smith.
