New Jersey Attorney General Investigating Fatal Crash During Police Stop in Asbury Park

Neptune Township, N.J. – One person was killed and two others injured when police attempted to stop a vehicle that was connected to a felony shooting investigation earlier.

At around 7:20 pm, officers attempted to initiate a stop of the vehicle by the Asbury Park Police Department in Asbury Park.

According to the preliminary investigation, Attorney General Matt Platkin said the crash came to rest at 527 Myrtle Avenue in Neptune Township.

“The officers were in the process of attempting to stop a vehicle in connection with a felony investigation which began with a report of shots fired. The driver struck a tree. Firearms were recovered near the vehicle,” a police report stated.

Now, the Attorney General’s Office is investigating the encounter during which a vehicle crash occurred, resulting in one occupant’s death and injury to three other vehicle occupants.   The crash occurred on Sunday. The identities of the decedent and the other individuals are not being released at this time.
