NEW CASTLE, DE – Customers at a Wawa in New Castle didn’t know what was happening when a tractor-trailer nearby starting venting a plume of liquid nitrogen. While there was no immediate threat to nearby onlookers, a large presence of liquid nitrogen released could have lead to headaches and some dizziness.
“On April 6, 2022 DNREC’s Emergency Response Team was dispatched to the Wawa at 4000 North DuPont Highway in New Castle, Delaware for reports of a tractor trailer leaking liquid nitrogen. The Minquadale Fire Company, Station 22, New Castle County Hazmat/Decon, Delaware State Fire School and Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT) also responded for assistance,” the Delaware NREC said. “Upon arrival, agencies found the tractor trailer to be actively venting nitrogen vapor in the parking lot. A representative from the trucking company responded to the scene and manipulated the necessary valves to stop the tanker from actively venting.”
There are currently no public safety concerns.
