NEWARK, NJ – The Newark Police Department has announced a suspect is now in custody after a shooting Tuesday outside American History High School. Police said Kevin M. Winston, 35, of Parsippany has been charged.

The shooting occurred just outside of American History High School.

“Although there was no threat to the school, it was locked down as a safety precaution. No one was injured,” Newark Public Safety Director Brian A. O’Hara said.

“I commend the Newark Shooting Response Team along with our detective, assigned to the Jersey City Police Department/Hudson Essex Advanced Technology (HEAT) Unit to aid in gun violence investigations, for so quickly identifying this suspect,” Director O’Hara said. “I am also grateful to Jersey City Public Safety Director James Shea and the Jersey City Police Department for their partnership in helping us to apprehend this suspect.”

“Just after 2 p.m., police responded to a call of shots fired at Montgomery Street near Somerset Street. Responding officers were flagged down by a male victim who had been robbed and assaulted in Jersey City by suspects after a motor vehicle collision,” O’Hara added. “The victim continued to follow the suspects into Newark. The male driver exited the suspect vehicle in the area of Montgomery Street and Somerset Street and began shooting multiple rounds at the victim’s vehicle. The victim was not shot.”

Winston faces charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, conspiracy, unlawful possession of a weapon, criminal mischief and certain persons prohibited from weapon possession. Additional charges are pending in connection with the robbery and assault that occurred in Jersey City.
