He thought she was 13 and wanted a date, she was an undercover cop, now he’s going to jail

BORDENTOWN, NJ – A man who solicited a 13-year-old girl for sex found out she was an undercover cop and now, he’s going to jail.

Burlington County Prosecutor Scott Coffina announced that a 36-year-old Blackwood man who pled guilty to attempting to meet an underage girl for sex at a Bordentown Township park last year has been sentenced to parole supervision for life and will also be placed on the New Jersey sex offender registry.

Under an agreement with the Prosecutor’s Office, Jason McCann pled guilty in March to Attempt to Commit Endangering the Welfare of a Child – Impairing or Debauching the Morals of a Child (Third Degree) in exchange for a three-year sentence in New Jersey state prison.

In addition to parole supervision for life and registration as a sex offender, the State argued at the November 17 sentencing that McCann be sent to prison in accordance with the plea agreement, but the Hon. Philip E. Haines, J.S.C., decided to issue a non-custodial sentence instead.

The investigation into McCann began in July 2020 after he used an instant messaging app to arrange a rendezvous and send pictures of his genitals and videos of himself masturbating to someone he thought was a 13-year-old girl. In reality, the person he was communicating with was a Special Agent with United States Homeland Security Investigations.

McCann was prosecuted by Assistant Prosecutor Joseph Remy.
