SOUTH ORANGE, NJ – WSOU, a radio station based out of Seton Hall University calls it “Pirate Radio”. Catholic priests in New Jersey are calling it “Satanic Radio”. The station, which has been student run for over thirty years has always specialized in alternative music. In the 70s and 80s it was known as one of the better punk stations in the state. Later, they were at the forefront of the 90s grunge movement.
Now, as always, the student jockeyed station is still a leading force in the alternative music stream. In 2009, the church got involved and started hosting a daily mass, “Mornings with Mother”, and other Catholic and Christian based programming mended into the daily routine.
“Father James Altman rallied New Jersey Catholics last week in a prayerful and peaceful protest against Seton Hall University’s radio station WSOU. On June 16, a large gathering of men, women, and children gathered in front of Sacred Heart Basilica Cathedral in Newark to call on Cardinal Joseph Tobin to shut down the station, which has been airing satanic music for over 34 years,” John-Henry Weston wrote.
