ROCHESTER, NY – Jail Captain James McGowan of the Monroe County Jail confirmed this week that 33 inmates in the downtown Rochester correctional facility have tested positive for COVID-19. McGowan said it was only a matter of time before the virus entered the jail system. 173 inmates are now in protective quarantine and every inmate has been tested, with a 4.6% positivity rate among inmates at the facility. McGown said his staff is working to contain the spread of the virus and deputies are undergoing proactive screening prior to entering the facility.
“At some point in time, with the prevalence, it was in the county, we knew it would get in here somehow. And the day is here,” said Monroe County Jail Captain James McGowan
