Teen girl assaulted with firearm in Kirby Park after trying to break up argument

A young girl was injured after stepping in to stop a fight — and was struck with a firearm in a Wilkes-Barre park.

WILKES-BARRE, PA — A 13-year-old girl was struck in the face with a firearm by a teenage boy after attempting to de-escalate a dispute in Kirby Park on Saturday evening, according to the Wilkes-Barre City Police Department.

Police were dispatched to the park at approximately 7:30 p.m. following reports of a female gunshot victim. Upon arrival, officers learned both the victim and the suspect had fled the immediate scene.

The girl was later found inside the park with her mother and received on-site treatment from EMS.

Witnesses say victim tried to intervene before assault

According to statements gathered by officers, the altercation began when the victim observed her friend in a verbal confrontation with a male suspect. She reportedly attempted to step between the two to prevent the situation from escalating further.

The victim told police the suspect then pulled out a firearm and struck her in the face. No gunshots were fired during the incident, and no other injuries were reported.

Investigation into juvenile assault continues

The suspect, described as a Black male approximately 14 to 15 years old, fled the area following the incident. Police have not confirmed whether the suspect has been identified or located.

The Wilkes-Barre City Police Department continues to investigate the assault and is gathering additional witness statements. No arrests have been announced at this time.
