PHILADELPHIA, PA — A Philadelphia jury convicted Talim Hunt of first-degree murder and multiple related charges last week for the fatal shooting of 45-year-old Cody Hargett, District Attorney Larry Krasner announced Monday.
Hunt, 24, was found guilty on April 24, 2025, in connection with two separate shootings involving Hargett, one of which occurred just weeks before Hargett’s death. Hunt was sentenced by Judge Roxanne Covington to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Key Points
- Talim Hunt was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life without parole.
- Hunt shot Cody Hargett twice in September 2022 and fatally shot him in October 2022.
- Cell phone data and DNA evidence linked Hunt to both crime scenes.
On September 20, 2022, Hargett was shot twice in the shoulder after fleeing Hunt’s residence in the Logan section of Philadelphia. Surveillance footage captured Hunt pursuing and opening fire on Hargett with a handgun. Investigators were unable to establish a motive for the shooting.
On October 9, 2022, Hargett returned to Hunt’s residence. After a brief conversation, a physical altercation broke out, leading Hunt to fire multiple rounds. Hargett was struck nine times, including seven shots to the back while lying face down on the street. He died shortly after arriving at Einstein Medical Center.
Evidence from phone data and DNA critical in conviction
Investigators relied on cell phone location data and evidence recovered from Hunt’s phone to place him at both shooting scenes. DNA evidence from an Apple AirPod and a lighter found at the October crime scene further tied Hunt to the homicide.
Authorities were unable to determine a clear motive for either shooting despite the extensive investigation.
District Attorney Larry Krasner credited Assistant District Attorney Josh Myers and the Philadelphia Police Department for their efforts, stating, “I also thank… the jury for their careful consideration and deliberation of the facts in this case and for holding Mr. Hunt accountable for his flagrant disregard for public safety.”
Life sentence closes chapter on deadly violence
With Hunt’s sentencing, the case draws to a close more than two years after the violent incidents that cost Cody Hargett his life. Officials emphasized that the conviction underscores the city’s commitment to addressing gun violence.
Hunt’s conviction includes additional charges of aggravated assault, two counts of firearms violations, and two counts of possession of an instrument of crime.
