UPPER MARLBORO, MD — A Prince George’s County man turned his credit card balance into a winning lottery strategy, pocketing $50,000 after playing the exact numbers he owed — and now he’s using the windfall to pay off that debt in full.

The Upper Marlboro resident bought his lucky Pick 5 ticket on April 17 at Moore’s Country Store on Croom Road. Choosing the numbers 14432 — the balance listed on his credit card statement — the retired federal worker played the combination straight for $1 in both the midday and evening Pick 5 drawings.

The strategy paid off big when the 14432 sequence hit straight in the midday draw, netting him the $50,000 top prize.

Winner plans to clear debt and fund home upgrades

The longtime lottery player, who previously claimed a Pick 5 jackpot in 2023, said he realized the big win later that evening after checking the results on the Maryland Lottery website. His wife accompanied him to claim the prize on Wednesday, April 24.

In addition to paying off his credit card, the winner shared plans to use part of the prize money for home improvement projects.

Moore’s Country Store, where the winning ticket was purchased, will receive a $500 bonus from the Maryland Lottery for selling the top-prize ticket.
