Toms River, NJ — A new horror movie is being filmed in Toms River and around Ocean County, according to multiple reports, and while there are some rumors that it’s Steven Spielberg’s new UFO sci-fi thriller, it’s not. While that movie is also being shot across South Jersey, this one is a bit more homegrown.

This week, film crews were spotted in Lacey Township at a Main Street laundromat, and over the weekend, they set up at the Fast Break breakfast shop on Route 37 in Toms River, adding to the growing anticipation among locals eager for a glimpse of the iconic director or a hint of the film’s mysterious plot.

Other major film productions that took place in Toms River over the years include The Amityville Horror and Creepshow.

South Jersey has become the backdrop for a gripping new film, The Block, directed by Toms River native Craig Singer, known for his work in the mystery and horror genres.

The Block, a mystery-thriller, began filming in January and has been utilizing various South Jersey locations, though specific plot details remain under wraps.

Singer, who previously directed the Ocean County-shot thriller 6:45 (2020), is no stranger to the area, often choosing his hometown and nearby towns as settings for his projects.

That film, a time-loop horror about a couple trapped in a deadly cycle on a quiet island, showcased Singer’s knack for turning familiar locales into eerie, suspenseful settings.

On April 17, residents of Lacey Township noticed film crews transforming the Main Street laundromat into a bustling set.

“There were cameras and lights everywhere, and they had the whole place blocked off,” said a local resident. “It’s not every day you see a movie being made at the laundromat!”

The production reportedly filmed interior scenes, with the laundromat closed to the public for the day.
