NOTTINGHAM, MD — A long-forgotten Maryland Lottery scratch-off ticket tucked away during the holidays turned into a $50,000 windfall for a Nottingham mother and son who stumbled on the surprise win while moving furniture.

Key Points

  • A $5 Holiday Luck Doubler ticket won $50,000 after being rediscovered in a furniture move.
  • The ticket was originally meant to be a Christmas stocking stuffer.
  • The winners, a mother and son, are splitting the prize and using the funds for family needs.

The winning scratch-off surfaced when the son, helping move furniture at his mother’s home, discovered five old lottery tickets she had purchased as stocking stuffers for her adult children. One of those tickets — a $5 Holiday Luck Doubler — turned out to be a top-prize winner worth $50,000.

The son asked if he could scratch the tickets, and they agreed to split any winnings. They later claimed the prize under the nickname “We’ll Split It.”

Disbelief turns into celebration

The son scratched the tickets at home with his wife. After uncovering the $50,000 prize, they called his mother to confirm it was real. The win was verified during their visit to Maryland Lottery headquarters.

The remaining tickets included one winner for $6 and another for $15. The $50,000 prize was the largest by far.

Family plans for the prize

The son plans to use his share to save for a house and repay debts owed to his mother. The mother will share her portion with other adult children, a grandchild, and another grandchild on the way.

The winning ticket was sold at Walther Liquors, located at 8625 Walther Blvd. in Nottingham. The store will receive a $500 bonus for selling the top-prize ticket.
